Brooklyn's history – from its beginnings as a Dutch colony in the seventeenth century to today.

In 1636, The Canarsie Indians sold the area we now know as Brooklyn to the Dutch West India Company. The Dutch built a wooden fort and called it Breuckelen after Breukelen, Holland. The fort was strategically located at the end of a long brook, and the land around it was mostly marshland.

In 1664, the English took over control, and renamed it Kings County. In 1683, it was renamed again, this time to Kings County of New York.

During the colonial era, the land was farmed, and settlers began to build small houses. As the population grew, more land was farmed, and shantytowns were built to house the local residents.

In 1834, Kings County became part of the newly created New York City, along with four other counties. Brooklyn was separated from the other four counties and incorporated as a separate city.
